Some Winners and Losers

Ok, so Gustav turned out to be a wuss. Obama’s speech was good. Palin’s speech was better. She’s going to win this election for McCain. Go check it out on YouTube. I don’t see eye-to-eye with Palin on a lot of policy issues; she’s a bit to the right of my comfort zone…McCain, Giuliani, and the Governator are more my style. However, she tore Obama a new one. Great one-liners and memorable zingers. Loved it.

In other, non-political news, my fantasy draft took place this week. My team:

QB - Derek Anderson
RB1 - Adrian Peterson
RB2 - Laurence Maroney
WR1 - Marques Colston
WR2 - Greg Jennings
TE - Vernon Davis
K - Ryan Longwell
DEF - Patriots

Reserves
QB - Jason Campbell
QB - Philip Rivers
RB - Rudi Johnson
WR - Joey Galloway
WR - Nate Burleson
WR - Mark Clayton
DEF - Ravens

A bit shallow at RB…if Maroney or Peterson goes down I’m in trouble. Very gifted at QB, everyone has Campbell listed as a sleeper and Rivers is poised for a very nice year. I consider them trade bait if/when a marquee QB goes down. I’m in love with my WR corps as well. I think it will be a good year.

My NFL Week 1 Picks (vs the INLine Spread at ESPN)-
BOLD
denotes correct pick, * denotes push, ( ) denotes yet to play:

Giants -4 over Redskins
Bengals -2.5 over Ravens
Jets -5 over Miami
Pats -13 over Chiefs
Steelers -7.5 over Texans
Jaguars -3 over Titans
Lions -3.5 over Falcons
Seahawks over Bills
Saints -4 over Bucs*
Eagles -6.5 over Rams
Browns +6 over Cowboys
Panthers +6.5 over Chargers
Cardinals -1 over 49ers
Colts -8 over Bears
Vikings over Packers
Denver -1 over Oakland

Final record for the week: 7-8-1

Slow start. I’ll get it back next week.

I’d like to create an addendum to the losers portion:

How about, ‘Athletes coming out of retirement?’

Only a few short weeks after the whole Brett Favre mess had subsided, I was abhorred to discover another great athlete who has recently announced his un-retirement. (Drumroll) Lance Armstrong is ending his 3 year retirement and will be pursuing an eighth Tour de France victory in 2009.

Why couldn’t have have just let this be, and let his legacy live on. Fans of Armstrong will most likely now end up dissappointed, since he has been out of the game for 3 years, and competitors aspiring for the title will hate him for robbing him of their chance.

The Associated Press writes, “PARIS (AP)—Tour de France organizers are hardly thrilled at the prospect of Lance Armstrong returning for a shot at an eighth victory in cycling’s showcase event.

Race director Christian Prudhomme said Wednesday the door is open for Armstrong to compete in the 2009 Tour, but he was cool on the idea and stressed the 36-year-old American must meet stringent new anti-doping standards to clear up the suspicions that dogged him throughout his career.”

If you’re going out on top, just do it. If you’ve had enough of the sport, retire, but then don’t come back.

My final judgement: Un-retirees = Losers
